The Regional and Outer Metropolitan division is focused on understanding the particular needs of regional communities across NSW and delivering customer-centred integrated transport services and infrastructure


The Opportunity

Right now, we have a permanent full-time opportunity for a Carpenter Team Leader to be part of our Regional Bridge Maintenance team based in Ballina, NSW.

The Carpenter Team Leader is responsible for on-site management coordination of a work crew and/or contractors; and provides coaching and leadership to team members. With your strong interpersonal skills your role is to manage and develop team performance and model positive behaviour. Your experience within the trade will allow you to make accurate decisions and provide solutions to complex problems. The area of operation is quite broad and may include maintenance of steel, concrete and timber bridges, slope remediation works and bridge painting.


You will be involved in:

  • Provide guidance and direction to team members and accept responsibility for work carried out individually or in a team environment by others.
  • Ability to deal with routine problems that arise during the course of work through the application of acquired knowledge and reference to standard guidelines and manuals.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and processes and pro-actively offer suggestions for improvement.
  • Apply interpersonal skills to resolve conflict between team members or others outside the team. Provide on the job training to team members in relevant procedures as required.
  • Manage WHS procedure and ensure adherence by your team.
  • Ensure that environmental risk assessment and control processes are applied at the worksite.


You will also be required to work at night occasionally and travel away from home as part of this role.


About you

We’re seeking a trade qualified carpenter with extensive experience in delivery of bridge related civil construction and maintenance activities. You will possess the criteria for Construction Carpenter Grade 3, have solid leadership skills and proven experience supervising trade/ non trade staff.

 You hold one of the following trades:

  • Carpenter and Joiner; Construction Carpenter; Bridge and Wharf Carpenter; Civil Engineering Construction Carpenter; or equivalent

You are experienced in risk management and following site environment management procedures and implementation of environmental controls and safeguards.


Finally, you hold a White Card, a current drivers licence, and are able to work outside normal working hours, attend call-outs, travel across the region and stay away from home when needed.

Applicants must be based within 100km of the depot in Ballina NSW or be willing to relocate to within 100km of the depot in Ballina.


Wage and Benefit

The wage for this position is Grade (Team Leader 2) ($1, 498.50) per week plus superannuation.
