Systems Architect - Telecommunication (Temporary Opportunity up to 20 months)

Organisation/Entity:  Sydney Trains
Job category:  Rail Operations
Job location:

Burwood, NSW, AU, 2134

Job reference number:  102515
Employment type:  Fixed Term Full-Time
Salary range:  $163149.0-$179913.0

You excel at connecting the dots as a problem solver, ensuring the seamless delivery of reliable services from beginning to end.

If finding complex technological solutions is your game, we've got the team for you. You're going to help us create seamless operations that result in efficiency for millions of customers.

In this role, you'll:

Be part of the Asset Program team within Asset Management of the Engineering and Maintenance Directorate within Sydney Trains.  You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the system architecture for a major system-of-interest within a dedicated program of work. While this role is allocated to a specific program, a strong understanding of how the program interacts with other technical initiatives and existing operational systems across Sydney Trains is essential.

Acting as the Engineering Authority for Operational Technology (OT) system architecture, you will lead concept generation, conduct tradespace exploration, drive concept selection activities, and guide the evolution of the architectural solution across complex operational systems supporting both program and organisational objectives.

A key aspect of this role involves working in a collaborative, multi-partner environment. You will work closely with an external Client-Side System Integrator (CSSI) engaged by Sydney Trains to support major program activities. This includes:

  • Collaborating as peers in architecture development and integration planning
  • Participating in joint architecture working groups and regular technical workshops
  • Reviewing and assuring the CSSI’s technical outputs
  • Providing technical and architectural guidance
  • Ensuring the CSSI’s detailed architectural artefacts, documentation, system modelling and analysis align with Sydney Train’s process and systems
  • Jointly shaping key deliverables such as reference architectures, interface definitions, and integration strategies

Because the program intersects with several existing and in-flight operational systems, you will work closely with internal Sydney Trains System Architects responsible for those systems. This ensures architectural alignment, consistency of principles, and effective integration across program boundaries.

You will also play a pivotal role in managing the ongoing maintenance and evolution of the program’s system architecture throughout the program phases, ensuring it continues to support strategic goals and adapts to emerging requirements.

This is a temporary full time position until 30/6/2027.

About you

  • Completion of a four-year or longer degree in Information Technology, Electrical, Systems Engineering, or an equivalent discipline and meeting the requirements for Professional Engineer (MIEAust) membership grade with Engineers Australia.
  • Proven experience as a Systems Architect with a focus on telecommunications and operational systems.
  • Extensive background in system architecture and design, including end-to-end solution development.
  • Strong understanding of telecom network technologies (e.g., OSS/BSS, 4G/5G, IP networks, signalling protocols).
  • Expertise in architecture frameworks and methodologies such as the Unified Architecture Framework, ARCADIA methodology, or similar and hands-on experience with architectural modelling tools.
  • Working knowledge of cloud-native architectures, NFV/SDN, and microservices design.
  • Ability to lead concept generation, tradespace exploration, and architecture evolution.
  • Familiarity with security standards, compliance requirements, and regulatory frameworks in telecommunication industry.
  • Proficiency in integration design and interoperability between complex systems.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills to work across engineering, operations, and business teams.
