About the team


Our Engineering and Maintenance directorate manages a $1.5 billion annual maintenance program on behalf of Sydney Trains and NSW Trains – delivering a safe, reliable passenger fleet and metropolitan rail network, to meet growing customer demand and keep Sydney moving.


Our Fleet Maintenance Division maintains electric and diesel passenger fleets for Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink at seven depots spread across the network, as well as technical fault finding advice to crew, in-service response to train faults and failures, and emergency train recovery.



The opportunity


We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Shunter to become a part of our Fleet Maintenance Division within Sydney Trains based at Eveleigh Maintenance Centre.


This position will report to the Eveleigh Precinct Manager, Fleet Maintenance and will work closely with other Fleet Operators at Eveleigh being a multi-user site.


The primary purpose of this role is to receive, pilot, marshal, and dispatch Electric and Diesel rolling stock and facilitate the safe and efficient movement of trains for scheduled inspections, maintenance and repairs to meet working timetables for the site rail operators.


This is a full-time permanent opportunity and the successful applicant will be required to work on a 24/7 shift work roster.  


What will you be involved in?


  • Marshall trains within the Centre for inspection, maintenance and repairs along appropriate roads, and within timeframes as requested by Site Rail operators.
  • Remarshal trains to remove defective carriages requiring maintenance or repairs as required by site Rail Operators.
  • Accept and despatch trains in accordance with train arrival and departure rosters.
  • Communicate verbally with signalling staff when accepting and despatching trains to and from the maintenance centres.
  • Complete all train movements in a practical and efficient manner as required.
  • Follow defined occupational health and safety policies and procedures in order to ensure own safety and the safety of others in the workplace.

About you 


Training will be provided to the successful applicant on site however the role requires an individual who has the ability to comprehend the phonetic alphabet & has sound planning and problem solving skills.


The successful applicant will be flexible, adaptable, punctual, safety conscious, possess basic computer skills & be a strong communicator.


The flexibility & fatigue management skills to work a 24/7 rotating roster are essential.



Salary and benefits


The salary for this position is Head Shunter Special Class ($1,362.85 p.w) plus super, shift allowances & annual leave loading.
