Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is the lead agency of the NSW Transport cluster. Our role is to lead the development of a safe, efficient, integrated transport system that keeps people and goods moving, connects communities and shapes the future of our cities, centres and regions. About the Team



The Greater Sydney Division integrates transport modes including trains, metro and buses; critical infrastructure and services to support Sydney’s growing metropolitan population, projected to swell to over 12 million within the next 40 years.


The Transport Management Centre (TMC) is a 24/7 operations centre, which coordinates the live operations of our Transport network across NSW. The centre handles over 200,000 calls each year reporting transport network incidents on our roads, rail, ferries and buses.


The Opportunity


Right now, we have two (2) unique opportunities for a Senior Transport Information Manager to join the TMC and play an integral part in managing all aspects of front line information dissemination with relevant stakeholders, to meet our customer care objectives relating to unplanned incidents and planned events and road occupancies. The position will ensure timely, relevant and detailed customer information is communicated to the public through appropriate channels, including leading and coordinating all operational communications during a crisis.


The TMC is a 24/7 operations centre and you will be required to work rostered rotating shifts that include weekends and act as a 24-hour contact for the organisation and the media.


These are two (2) fixed term opportunities (up to 18 months) opportunities based in Eveleigh.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team, including developing and mentoring team members, managing performance, driving change, working constructively with others in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Lead and develop customer communications strategies to improve customer information by working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Establish standards of communication best practice and policies to manage high levels of customer service.
  • Deliver strong media management for planned and unplanned incidents through strategic messaging across all channels, and act as an organisational spokesperson, when required.
  • Improve business efficiency and customer satisfaction by establishing and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and developing an understanding of business needs.
  • Develop and maintain a network of reliable contacts with government, traffic and transport operators, other external stakeholders and the media to assist in the delivery and achievement of the communication goals and objectives of the Transport cluster.
  • Manage all operational communication during major incidents while working closely with senior operational staff in the Transport Operations Room.
  • Conduct verbal and written briefings of senior executives and ministerial staff during major incidents and emergency situations.

About You


You are a dynamic and passionate people leader with demonstrated experience in an operational and hands-on communications environment. You are also a strategic thinker and thrive under pressure, with the ability to convert complex operational information during major incidents and/or events into seamless information made available to the public, key stakeholders and executive briefings.


This is a challenging and high pressure, yet rewarding role, where you must have the ability to think on your feet and make quick and informed decisions within a live 24/7 operations centre environment. A natural leader, you empower your team and develop their capability while leading by example.


Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as communications and/or relevant industry experience is ideal, along with the ability to identify issues with a high risk or potential public exposure and provide a managed response. Ideally you will also be familiar with available technologies such as camera, radio, and content management systems.



Salary and Benefits


The salary for this position is Transport Grade 9 ($138,670 - $155,309) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
