About the Team


The Regional and Outer Metropolitan (ROM) division is focused on understanding the particular needs of regional communities across NSW and delivering customer-centred integrated transport services and infrastructure.

The Network & Assets Branch are the Custodian of the regional road and rail network assets – including intercity and regional rail rollingstock. Network & Assets manage the assets to deliver safe, sustainable, and integrated services to regional communities. 


The Opportunity

The role, under the lead of the Senior Manager AEM, develops, implements, and utilises systems, processes and procedures required to manage the introduction into service, maintenance, and operating performance of Transport for NSW’s intercity and regional rollingstock fleet and training simulators, and rollingstock maintenance facilities. 

The position ensures that Network and Asset branch manages its fleet to deliver on the organisational and asset management objectives for TfNSW. It takes a whole of life approach to the management of fleet and infrastructure assets, which includes ensuring asset performance, building supplier relationship, optimising total asset life cycle cost, high availability and reliability, and management of risk, with safety as the highest priority in the role. 

The Asset Engineer contributes towards the following day to day responsibilities: 

•Assist in developing and implementing plans, and review and monitor supplier asset management plans and asset related contractual requirements to support asset management objectives 
•Participate in and lead incident investigations of rolling stock and/or infrastructure related faults, providing support to any incident investigations as required, and provide evidence for TfNSW’s representative for initial and attribution discussions 
•Assist with the delivery of asset related projects to deliver specified outcomes for stakeholders in terms of safety, scope, quality, standards, budgets, timeframes and customer expectations. 
•Contribute to the development and implementation of key engineering performance indicators to ensure all projects are delivered to organisational standards and legislative requirements and to drive continuous improvement and innovation across the business. 
•Review configuration change requests, propose asset change requests as considered appropriate and participate in Configuration Change Board (CCB) to support the process of making changes to configuration of the fleet maintenance facilities 
•Contribute to the oversight of the maintenance and assurance activities of the fleet and infrastructure by performing regular audits of the fleet, confirming the state of the physical assets meet that of the documentation, and compliance to the asset management plans and design documentation.
•Control the client-side process for assessing and approving concessions and waivers to the fleet or maintenance activities, engaging with a range of stakeholders from varied parts of the TfNSW business 


The position can be based in the Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast Regions, or Dubbo. 
Travel will be required on occasions to meet business deliverables.

About You

You’re an influential team player, capable of building key relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You will have excellent communication skills both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt quickly to an ever-changing environment and a willingness to embrace new working methodologies. 

You have extensive experience in managing a range of commercial activities across different functional areas within a complex environment with a strong grasp of NSW Government commercial policies and guidelines. 


It is essential you have a four-year electrical, mechanical or mechatronics engineering degree from an Australian University or equivalent overseas qualifications. Experience in the engineering management, asset management and/or maintenance of complex rail, rollingstock and /or technical systems and equipment is also required.

Salary and Benefits  

The salary for this position is TfNSW Grade 9 ($138,670 - $155,309) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
