The Division

 

The Customer Strategy and Technology team within Transport leads the development of long-term, multi-modal network strategies and place plans across NSW. We leverage data and insights, implement new technologies, drive innovation and build partnerships to provide customer-centred solutions.

 

 

The opportunity

 

We have a permanent full time opportunity for 2 x Senior Data Scientist to join the Advanced Analytics & Insights branch within the Customer Strategy and Technology Branch. This role will work as a member of a discrete team of data scientists responsible for determining and acting on opportunities to improve the way that the Transport network is developed and manage. Through the intelligent processing and modelling of vast amounts of data, the role develops actionable recommendations that will result in tangible improvements to the services provided by Transport for NSW.


 

What you will be involved in

 

The successful candidate will partner with colleagues to produce statistical analyses and data science products that support predictive analytics to facilitate improved communication and decision making on the ‘big opportunities’ to ease network congestion, improve safety, and improve the customer journey experience. Additionally, this role will be responsible for:

 

  • Applying data science techniques using cloud technologies and analytical applications to deliver insights;
  • Working with colleagues, other transport Divisions, contractors, and 3rd parties to identify new data sources that contribute to the delivery of actionable insights;
  • Creating features using data science techniques that can be used in reporting and other analytics applications;
  • Create processes for anomaly detection and apply state of the art data mining techniques to large datasets;
  • Provide peer assurance of both model inputs and outputs for the purposes of quality assurance and aligning with the delivery objectives, projections and communicated outcomes;
  • Create data assets that assist Transport for NSW in engaging with customers and industry with information that illustrates the benefits of changes to customer behaviour or planning decisions;
  • Lead the collaboration and discussions with stakeholders to effectively demonstrate the value of Data Science with high quality interactions and presentations to stakeholders generating improved customer insights and outcomes;
  • Drive the convergence between Data Science and more traditional transport modelling to include big data exploration combined with modern programming techniques to extend existing proven theories and domain knowledge.

 

 

About you

 

To be successful in the role:

 

  • Be an autonomous worker with strong communication skills and an ability to build rapport easily with stakeholders.
  • Have an understanding of machine learning & artificial intelligence techniques.
  • Possess expert level skills and experience using SQL to perform analysis and manipulate data efficiently and knowledge of relational databases and architecture.
  • Knowledge and experience writing applications/scripts and products using advanced scripting and object-oriented programming in Python, C# or JAVA.
  • Be skilled in source control and comfortable with tools such as Git.
  • Have exposure to data visualisation applications such as Tableau or AWS QuickSight;
  • Experienced with Big Data platforms and associated applications, including an understanding of NoSQL databases and knowledge and experience using Advanced Analytics applications (ideally Python but R will also be view favourably);
  • Good applied statistics skills such as distributions, statistical testing and regression
  • An ability to undertake cross validation of models;
  • Experience coordinating with other teams for planning, design, governance, engineering and release management of processes and to ensure timely and accurate delivery of data and analytics services.
  • Working understanding or experience working in an Agile methodology.

Salary and Benefits 

 

The salary for this position is Transport Grade 9 ($138,670 - $155,309) plus 10% superannuation and annual leave loading.
