About the team


The Safety, Environment and Regulation (SER) division upholds safety and sustainability in our transport system. We’re working to deliver globally recognised, safe, sustainable transport for our people, customers and the community.


The Asset Management Branch sits within SER and leads and enables transport service outcomes for customers and communities through effective whole of life asset management to ensure the safe, effective and efficient movement of people and goods across our network.


Within Asset Management Branch, there are seven Engineering cohorts including the Interchanges and Buildings team. Interchanges and Buildings is responsible for the strategic and technical leadership and asset management assurance of stations, light rail stops, bus stops, wharves and associated facilities such as tunnels, carparks, maintenance facilities and the like. The Interchanges and Buildings team has subject matter experts in the areas of architecture, accessibility and building services engineering. The team coordinates with experts within other AMB Engineering cohorts and across the Transport cluster.


The means by which we discharge our accountabilities are through the establishment and implementation of frameworks, governance of technical standards, and overseeing changes to Transport assets, services and systems.  The team also provides technical assurance and governance across the whole organisation.



The opportunity


We have a permanent full-time opportunity for a Senior Engineer Fire to join the team.  Reporting to the Director Interchanges & Buildings, the role is responsible for ensuring fire services outcomes across the Transport cluster are realised in a manner that discharges out enterprise accountabilities. These include statutory compliance, safety, risk, cost, and performance.


You will:

  • Develop and oversee implementation of frameworks for the control of fire engineering outcomes
    • Develop Transport standards related to fire engineering that are multi-modal and address all stages of the asset life cycle
    • Champion the adoption of Transport standards related to fire engineering and promote intelligent means of compliance
    • Lead and support initiatives designed to improve fire engineering outcomes for the Transport cluster
    • Research fire systems, processes, practices, data and related information, incorporate into the relevant frameworks and disseminate to relevant parties
    • Contribute to the standards development process for other disciplines
  • Conduct assurance activities which may include review, documentation audit, site inspection or the like
    • Technical assessment of concessions to Transport standards whilst balancing competing interests and assuring the expected outcomes
    • Conduct technical capability assessments and audits of Authorised Engineering Organisations (AEOs) / Technically Assured Organisations (TAOs)
    • Review and advise on documentation such as designs, drawings, strategies, policies, plans, assessments, NCC performance solutions, authorisations etc
    • Collaborate with and balance competing demands from relevant stakeholders of technical and non-technical backgrounds

About you


To be successful in this role you will be required to have:


  • Tertiary qualifications in Fire Engineering and having demonstrated knowledge of transport infrastructure, transport operations and safety systems in a large, complex organisation.
  • Thorough knowledge or awareness of relevant codes of practice, standards, regulatory legislation relating to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of fire protection systems.
  • Thorough understanding of current and emerging technologies relevant to design, maintenance and/or operation of fire protection systems, especially with respect to advancements that will impact on fire engineering (e.g. electric vehicle fires).
  • Demonstrated capability in delivering technical advice and directions, performing advanced investigations and analyses in a technology-driven environment.
  • Capacity to operate both independently, using initiative and self-direction, and as a team member to produce consistently high-quality work.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, discretion, and judgement while maintaining a strong customer service approach.

In addition, you understand competing views, are a strategic thinker and understand what intelligent compliance is.  Your exceptional communications skills, solutions focussed writing and collaborative approach to your work enable you to thrive in a multi-disciplinary team. 



Salary and benefits


The salary for this position is a Professional Engineer Grade C ($138,670 – $155,309) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
