The Opportunity


As the Land Use Planner within the West & Central Land Use Assessment Team of the Greater Sydney Division, your role is responsible for coordinating and preparing land use and transport planning advice to planning authorities and private developers for land use planning and development proposals.


The role will suit an urban planning professional with demonstrated experience in roles related to the development application assessment, Urban and Regional Planning and Transport Planning processes. We will also consider people from other backgrounds with relevant skills and experience in NSW Government planning legislation and the Roads Act 1993.

Analytical thinking and an understanding of the NSW planning system are key to the role. You will have the ability to review multiple development applications, in a time critical environment and assess their impacts – this requires high level problem-solving, planning and prioritising, creativity, and a focus on achieving balanced outcomes for transport customers, working collaboratively with internal colleagues.


Some key responsibilities of the role include:


  • Ensure Transport for NSW meets its statutory obligations in responding to development consent authorities under the requirements of the Environmental Planning and Assessment (EP&A) Act and the Roads Act in respect to land use plans, development applications and proposals by adhering to the required timeframes.
  • Ensure that land use development does not compromise network safety or efficiency objectives and identify appropriate measures to resolve potential conflicts.
  • Ensure the relevant stakeholders understand Transport for NSW requirements for land use plans and development consents by liaising and negotiating with TfNSW staff, State Government (transport, environment and planning agencies), Council officers, and public and private organisations.
  • Work collaboratively with other regions to build a consistent approach to land use planning assessment and management.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies, to integrate existing and future land uses as part of transport infrastructure and services.

About You


Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. This role has numerous stakeholders including developers, councils, internals design teams and SMEs, so it is crucial that you can engage with a diverse audience and deal with people at all levels - building rapport and developing strong relations across internal and external sources and, leverage these relationships to seek the appropriate advice and information required to inform your decisions, as well as influence and negotiate outcomes and overcome challenges.


You will be joining a collaborative and busy team, working on multiple planning applications simultaneously, need to plan and prioritise to be an organised and customer focused person who can demonstrate excellent time management and prioritisation skills - enjoy delivering exceptional customer experiences in a constantly changing environment.


The home location for this role is our Parramatta office, however there is the option to work from the Greater Sydney or Wollongong region. Transport for NSW offers flexible working arrangements and supports a balance of office and work from home options.

Salary and Benefits


The salary for this position is Transport Grade 8 - $120,423 to $ 134,872 per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
