Job Ref No:  63061
Employment Type:  Permanent Full-Time

About us

Transport for NSW keeps our State moving by providing safe, integrated and efficient transport systems. We put our customers at the centre of everything we do – and we do a lot. We connect people, communities and industry and manage how they use our road, rail and maritime networks and services, and even active modes like walking and cycling. The work we do connects the journeys you take every day.

We are a state government organisation made up of more than 28,000 people and we're in the middle of delivering the largest transport infrastructure program in Australia's history. We work across planning, policy and procurement, harnessing data and technology to develop smarter and more adaptive transport solutions.

That means job opportunities in metropolitan and regional areas right across NSW – you have the chance to be part of creating a lasting legacy that will benefit generations to come.

About the team

Rail Delivery leads the delivery of all rail projects and ensure the outcomes meet client expectations and are fit for purpose. With specialised knowledge and delivery expertise in the rail environment brought together in one team, we manage the integration of all rail projects to efficiently deliver safe and successful projects across the rail network, for both Greater Sydney and Regional & Outer Metropolitan client divisions.

The $25 billion portfolio of NSW projects includes the multi-billion dollar More Trains, More Services program, the roll out of the new Digital Systems and Automatic Train Protection programs, the delivery of all new rolling stock including the New Intercity Fleet and Regional Rail Fleet, and many other diverse infrastructure projects to improve access to the NSW transport system. This includes the Transport Access Program, which upgrades stations’ accessibility and creates places within a community, and projects which promote the use of rail to travel.

The opportunity/project

One of the most exciting projects within Rail Delivery at the moment is the Digital Systems Program; which is a transformational project that will change the way we track and communicate with trains. We have an opportunity in our Competency & Learning stream for a Deputy Project Manager to help us develop a world-class training and competency assessment solution. This includes exploring how we can leverage technology to support learning outcomes. At the moment we’re exploring concepts like virtual reality, augmented reality and training simulators.

Day-to-day, the Deputy Project Manager focuses on ensuring we’re aligned with other streams of this large and complex project. That includes updating our schedule, tracking our financial spend, capturing our risks, and preparing reports and presentations for our stakeholders. The DPM is also a problem-solver – identifying risks and issues impacting our team, and working to find solutions. Strong negotiation and influence skills are always valuable. We use Agile methodologies and SCRUM in our stream, so ideally the DPM also acts as a SCRUM Master – helping our team continuously improve how they work together. A

commitment to ongoing learning and innovation is highly beneficial.

About you

With so much going on in the program, we’re looking for someone highly organised with flexibility and resilience. You will be exposed to situations where there’s no easy answers and no clear way forward. You’ll be the one facilitating conversation and collaboration to find solutions.

There’s a lot of creative, energetic people in our team. We need someone who can balance us out by being more structured and detail-oriented. But we also need someone that can work well with people with different communication styles (and possibly less interest in tedious things like timeframes and budgets).

With us exploring technological solutions, we appreciate anyone with a high level of digital literacy. If you are generally quite good with computers and understanding how technology works, you’ll fit right in.

We’re committed to professional development and continuous improvement. You don’t need to know everything when you join us. But we will expect you to be committed to continually building new skills and challenging yourself.

The following will be highly regarded:

  • A tertiary qualification – for example in Instructional Design or Psychology, in Computing & Technology, or in Engineering or Construction. Equivalent experience is also fine.
  • Previous experience in learning & development or competency management.
  • Previous experience working with Agile methodologies and SCRUM.

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position is Grade 8 ($120,423) – ($134,872) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
