In this role, you'll:
In this role, you will oversee the real-time operation of statewide ramp metering systems, with a focus on key corridors like the M4 Smart Motorway (M4SM), Rozelle and future corridors. You'll also manage real-time traffic signal operations, responding to live traffic conditions. Your primary responsibility will be to manage SRMS, SCATS, and MMS, intervening as necessary to control ramp metering and minimize congestion while ensuring traffic flows smoothly and safely.


In this role you will:

  • Manage and operate ramp meters in real time using SRMS, SCATS, and MMS according to the established operation plans and make necessary adjustments based on traffic patterns to ensure optimal traffic flow and safety.
  • Optimise ramp metering to reduce congestion and delays on key corridors with a proactive approach.
  • Ensure ramp metering systems meet performance targets.
  • Monitor and assess congestion, responding to unplanned traffic incidents promptly to minimise impact on the network.
  • Implement real-time traffic signal operations and optimise smart motorways and corridors for enhanced network efficiency.
  • Communicate timely updates to transport stakeholders during incidents, coordinating the operation of traffic control systems in the Transport Management Centre.
  • Conduct audits and data collection on MMS and SCATS performance to identify areas for operational improvement.
  • Manage the implementation of advanced real-time traffic signal parameters to boost road safety and operational efficiency.
  • Support TMC and regional operations by assisting with real-time event and incident management to maintain smooth network performance.
  • Collaborate with other teams in the TOR for coordinated responses during day-to-day operation.

This is a temporary, full time position up to February 2027. This role is based at our Transport Management Centre (TMC) in Eveleigh, NSW, with a secondary working location at the ETMC in Auburn, NSW. As a shift-based position in a 24/7 operational environment, you will be required to work rostered, rotating shifts, including some weekends. In addition to the base salary, you will receive benefits such as penalty rates, overtime, and extra annual leave, all in line with the Transport Award.

About you
You will have the following skills and experience:

  • Proven experience in traffic management, traffic flow, and demand management, ideally within the Sydney road network.
  • Familiarity with traffic control systems such as SCATS, MMS, and SRMS, with experience operating smart motorways highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting traffic data, assessing network performance, and making informed recommendations.
  • Experience working within Transport for NSW or a private motorway operator, with an understanding of operational standards and procedures.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills to collaborate effectively with teams across the Transport Management Centre and broader Transport sector.
  • Proficiency in using multiple traffic control systems and software applications to optimise network efficiency and safety.
  • Ability to work shift-based schedules, including weekends, and adapt to the operational needs of a live traffic management centre.
