Lead Model Developer - ABM (Temporary opportunity up to 23 months)

In this role, you'll:
· Lead the design, development, and continual enhancement of strategic transport and freight models, with a primary focus on Activity-Based Modelling (ABM), to support robust, future-ready forecasting for Transport for NSW.
· Drive the evolution of foundational models by applying innovative techniques and data science practices that align with stakeholder needs and emerging transport trends.
· Oversee the prioritisation and planning of model development and enhancement activities in close consultation with model product owners and business stakeholders.
· Provide strategic and technical leadership to the model development team, ensuring high standards of modelling methodologies, tools, and practices are used across all stages of model lifecycle.
· Collaborate with the Model Assurance Manager to deliver rigorous assurance processes, validating modelling assumptions, data inputs, and outputs to ensure transparency, reliability, and external defensibility.
· Stay abreast of global and national advancements in transport modelling, forecasting methodologies, and related technologies, and translate insights into continuous improvement initiatives.
· Lead the development and refinement of the next-generation modelling roadmap by identifying capability gaps, opportunities for innovation, and aligning model infrastructure with Transport for NSW’s strategic planning vision.
· Champion the integration of real-world travel behaviour insights and system design thinking into the modelling process to ensure outputs reflect actual transport system use and future network demand.

About you
· Experience in developing and maintaining strategic transport and freight models, especially in Activity-Based Modelling (ABM).
· Strong understanding of transport and traffic planning, travel behaviour, and multimodal networks across urban, regional, and freight contexts.
· Hands-on experience using EMME and other transport modelling platforms for building, calibrating, and validating large-scale transport models.
· Proficient in Python, with experience applying it to modelling workflows, automation, and data integration.
· Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, provide guidance, and oversee planning, delivery, and review of modelling projects.
· Experience working with stakeholders to clearly communicate assumptions, outputs, and limitations.
· Knowledge of data science tools and modelling techniques to support scenario testing and advanced forecasting.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex results to non-technical audiences.
· Experience contributing to or developing modelling roadmaps, strategies, or improvement initiatives.
