In this role, you'll:

 


Join the TfNSW Infrastructure Engineering & Project Division, in the Future Fleet team, within Rail Fleet Programs Branch, on an exciting, Technical Director Development opportunity where you will lead the strategic direction and engineering governance required to deliver rolling stock infrastructure programs that are safe, compliant and cost effective.

The NSW Government has committed $87.7 million in the 2025-26 Budget to the development of a Full Business Case for the Future Fleet Program and the start of the long-lead procurement activities, including design and planning, to build the first double deck suburban passenger train replacements right here.

 

The NSW Government set aside $17.5 million in the 2024-25 Budget to develop a Preliminary Business Case for the Future Fleet Program.

That investment enabled Transport to hear what was important to industry, unions and government partners in revitalising local rail manufacturing in NSW, learn from the experiences of other states, and consider options to achieve the government’s local content targets.

You will oversee technical elements including scope development and optioneering, concept design development, engineering and gateway assurance and reviews, and system and network integration ensuring project outcomes align with required timeframes, budgets, safety and quality standards.

The role also provides expert technical guidance, manages interfaces with related projects, and ensures a consistent approach to technical issues while addressing broader government and stakeholder impacts.

You will provide strategic leadership and technical direction to ensure the development of innovative, safe, and value-for-money infrastructure solutions in line with program objectives, and lead and manage the planning and implementation of technical solutions that meet operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.

You will oversee the application of engineering governance and assurance frameworks throughout the development and design phases, ensuring compliance with legislative, regulatory, safety, and environmental requirements for infrastructure and fleet integration across all fleet programs.

You will act as the primary technical interface for complex stakeholder and industrial relationships, including engagement with unions, regulatory agencies, and third-party operators to support collaborative, safety-focused outcomes and resolve issues related to workforce and operational integration.

This is a hybrid flexible opportunity where you can mix work-from-home with office-days, there is an expectation for 2-3 days p/w from 680 George St Sydney. The remuneration for this position is within the TSSE 1A Band ($201k - $258k inclusive of super). You will have a unique opportunity to become part of a TfNSW flagship program to deliver locally manufactured rolling stock for the state of NSW.

About you


Strong leadership skills and stakeholder management expertise, with the ability to drive performance in a complex politically and commercially sensitive environment.

Extensive experience in technical and engineering fields, the provision of engineering and technical services, and management of technical risk in large-scale and complex rail infrastructure projects.

Exposure within rail related infrastructure projects, including extensive rolling stock interface and integration experience.

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or demonstrated, relevant, equivalent professional experience.

This role has been identified as a Rail Safety Worker position.
